Eric SERRA - President of the jury

Introduced to music at the age of five (acoustic guitar), Eric Serra, son of the poet and singer Claude Serra, was born into the musical world. After his mother's death, his father raised him alone and taught him, among other things, music. For his eleventh birthday, he gave him an electric guitar.

Later, Eric Serra also learned to play drums, bass, synthesizer and piano. As a self-taught guitarist, he was strongly inspired by Ritchie Blackmore , Alvin Lee, Jeff Beck and John McLaughlin . At the age of fifteen, he formed his first band: FLEP. Eric Serra quickly became a professional musician, at sixteen he played with Youssou N'Dour, Mory Kanté and Jacques Higelin among others.

But it was really at the beginning of the 1980s that Eric Serra had the encounter that would change his life, that of Luc Besson , who then asked him to compose the music for his first film, a short film entitled L'Avant dernier , made in 1981. Eric Serra continued to work with the director and composed, in 1983, the music for Besson's first feature film, Le Dernier combat .

Eric Serra continued to work with the director and composed, in 1983, the music for Besson's first feature film, Le Dernier combat. The two men shared a great bond and it was quite natural that for each new film, Luc Besson called on his friend. In 1988, Eric Serra composed the music for Le Grand bleu. It was a global success, and some three million copies of the soundtrack were sold worldwide. This was followed by the soundtracks for Nikita in 1990, Atlantis in 1991 and Leon in 1994. In 1995, the composer was contacted by the James Bond team to score GoldenEye. Two years later, he reunited with Luc Besson once again for The Fifth Element. Between 2002 and 2005, he collaborated on various collective projects, including the soundtracks for Wasabi by Gérard Krawczyk, Rollerball by John McTiernan, Jet Lag by Danièle Thompson and The Guardian of the Sacred Manuscript by Paul Hunter. In 2006, Eric Serra, in partnership with Recall Group, founded a new music label dedicated entirely to film music: Recall Music For Films. He also worked on the composition of two new soundtracks for the film Bandidas by Joachim Roenning and Espen Sandberg and for the animated film Arthur and the Invisibles which marked the return of the Luc Besson / Eric Serra duo. Working almost exclusively with the French filmmaker, Serrat wrote the scores for two sequels to Arthur's adventures, then Adèle Blanc-Sec, The Lady, Lucy and Anna. He also composed that of the action film Braqueurs (co-written by Besson), which marked his last work for fiction to date.

Bernard BEE

Professional musician

Bernard Abeille, a jazzman from Marseilles in the service of natureBernard Abeille, a double bass player from Marseilles, is not only a musician, he is also a fervent defender of our planet and a whale lover. For over twenty years, he has been delivering his message through live performance. Was Bernard Abeille predestined to make his jazz hum in defense of our planet? The man with the frank smile and dreamy eyes has the look of a traveler and a name that's evocative to say the least. Another coincidence: as a child, he lived just a stone's throw from the Conservatoire, where he enrolled at the age of 25. He joined a jazz class and began with the guitar. Six years later, with his diploma in hand, Bernard Abeille decided to make a living from his passion, succumbing to the call of the double bass in the eighties.

It was with this seven-wooded behemoth that he cut his teeth. For ten years, he toured with Coco Verde, a jazz group with a soft Brazilian accent. In 1987, the stork gave him a gift: his daughter. Gone was the night owl's life of jazz club tours. In 1988, Bernard Abeille made a surprising sound discovery. I remember perfectly the day I imitated the sound of the whale for the first time with my double bass”, the musician recalls with emotion. Hunted for two centuries and now threatened by the degradation of its natural habitat, this diva of the seas is also known for its mysterious song. From the 90s onwards, the sea mammal became his totem animal, an “inexhaustible source of inspiration”. The sound of the instrument, perfectly reproducing the cetacean's song, and its image, majestically evolving in the deep blue, gave birth to Baleine et Contrebasse.

Luc BAIWIR

Professional musician

Luc Baiwir is a Belgian composer born in Liège in 1958, where he studied music at the Liège Conservatory and at the University of Liège as a psychologist. He won first prize for piano and soon turned to composition. His first works for solo piano led him to discover the world of electronic music and film music, and in 1987 he was awarded the first international composition prize “Prix François de Roubaix” (in homage to the famous film music composer) for a symphonic work entitled Seasong, at the Festival Mondial de l'Image Sous-Marine in Antibes, in the presence of composers from all horizons. His career as a composer was positively affected by this, with numerous commissions, notably from international television channels and above all from directors of underwater and wildlife documentaries. For several years now, Luc Baiwir has been active in classical composition, commissioned by numerous virtuoso performers, orchestras and chamber musicians.
